If you’re 16 or older and want to become a teacher in Maryland, you can apply for a registered teacher apprenticeship through participating school systems. As an apprentice, you’ll work in a school, earn a paycheck and earn college credit for the work you do on the job.

Once you find an apprenticeship program in your area, you’ll follow the school system’s application process.
In Maryland, apprentices often begin working in an instructional support role (sometimes called a paraeducator, teacher’s aide or teaching assistant). You'll learn how a classroom works, practice developing lessons and build your skills.
