Like other high-skilled professions, there are key steps to becoming a teacher in Maryland. The good news? You have several options to get there. We’ll walk you through an overview here, but if you’re looking for a detailed guide to earning a license—we’ve got you covered on our Guide to Teaching Licenses page.

To become a classroom teacher, you’ll need to earn a bachelor’s degree and complete an approved teaching program—also known as an educator prep program. You can earn your degree and license at the same time, or, if you already have a bachelor’s in any subject, you can apply to a post-grad teaching program. We’ll walk you through it all.

When it comes time to choose a teaching program, use our criteria to compare options. It’s easier to find a match when you know which programs will meet your specific needs.

Once you’ve found the right teaching program, it’s time to apply. You might need to write an essay, submit a resume, take a test or get letters of recommendation. We’ve got guides for all of that! If you run into fees along the way, we’ll even reimburse you up to $100 after you apply!

Don’t let finances stop you from getting started. You’ve got options, from work study to loans to scholarships and more.
