Before you enroll in a teaching program, you'll choose the pathway that fits your timeline, goals and experience. You’ll also need to decide the subject and grade level you want to teach, because this will determine the teaching license you pursue. Ideally, your degree matches your teaching subject—you have a degree in math to teach math or a degree in English to teach language arts, etc. If not, or if you want to teach special education or elementary grades, that’s okay! You have options. The FAQs have info about what to do.

Be sure to review all requirements up front, including the background check that must be passed before you can be licensed.

Make sure to look for programs that are state-approved and offer your chosen teaching license! Want your master’s? Look for a combined master’s degree + license teaching program. Want your teaching license without another degree? Look for a license-only program like a post-bacc or alternative license teaching program. Think you qualify for transcript analysis? You may not need to enroll in a teaching program if you’re already experienced in your field and in the classroom.

TEACH Maryland can help you save money on teaching program applications! We’ll reimburse up to $100 for any required application expenses. That includes application and transcript fees and more!

Gain hands-on experience through student teaching or supervised classroom teaching.

Some pathways require you to take teaching tests to show you’re ready to lead your own classroom. These exams show that you know your subject and understand how to teach it effectively. (That’s called pedagogy!) When do you take teaching exams? It depends on your program. You’ll usually take them toward the end of your program or shortly after you graduate.

Almost there! Your teaching program will confirm when you’re eligible to apply for your teaching license through the Maryland State Department of Education’s online portal. You’ll also complete a background check and fingerprinting as part of the process.
